Running for Assemblymember District 25, CA State Assembly District 25, in California
YIMBY Action endorses Assemblymember Ash Kalra because he has been a dependable partner on housing in Sacramento. As chair of the Assembly Judiciary Committee, he holds one of the most important gatekeeping roles for housing legislation, and he has worked with YIMBY advocates to move pro-housing bills forward.
Ash Kalra, a Democrat, represents California's 25th Assembly District, which covers the majority of San José. First elected to the Assembly in 2016, he became the first Indian American to serve in the California Legislature and was re-elected to his fifth term in 2024. He chairs the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Before the Assembly he served eight years on the San José City Council and was a Santa Clara County deputy public defender for 11 years. Born in Toronto, he moved to California in 1978 and lives in the South San José neighborhood where he grew up.
