Running for U.S. Representative District 1, CA Congressional District 1, in California
YIMBY Action supports Mike McGuire for Congress because California's housing crisis needs allies in Washington, and McGuire helped pass some of the biggest housing reforms in state history. As Senate President pro Tem, he led the Senate in 2025 when the Legislature passed landmark CEQA reform exempting most urban infill housing from environmental review. He also voted for SB 79, which legalizes more homes near transit. Rural and North State communities like those in the new 1st District are rebuilding from wildfires and facing their own housing shortages. McGuire knows these communities, and he'll fight for the federal funding and policy changes they need to build more homes.
Mike McGuire, a Democrat, is the California State Senator for Senate District 2, which stretches from the Golden Gate Bridge to the Oregon border. He was elected to the Senate in 2014 and re-elected in 2018 and 2022, became Majority Leader in 2022 and served as President pro Tempore of the Senate; he is now pro Tem Emeritus. Before the Senate he served on his local school board, city council and board of supervisors. A third-generation Northern Californian whose family farmed in Sonoma County, he lives in Geyserville with his wife Erika, an elementary school principal, and their son Connor.
