Running for Attorney General, CA Attorney General, in California
YIMBY Action endorses Rob Bonta for Attorney General because he has been one of the strongest enforcers of California's housing laws. In 2021 he created the Housing Strike Force, the first unit in the AG's office dedicated to holding cities accountable for breaking state housing law. Since then his office has taken on cities that tried to dodge their obligations, from suing Huntington Beach to stopping Woodside's attempt to block new homes by declaring itself mountain lion habitat. Just this summer, he warned Menlo Park that it can't use legal loopholes to stall a major housing project. Pro-housing laws only matter if someone enforces them, and Bonta has shown he will.
Rob Bonta is the Attorney General of California, appointed in 2021 and elected to a full term in 2022, and advanced from the June 2026 primary in his bid for re-election. He previously served nearly a decade in the California State Assembly, representing the 18th District from 2012 to 2021, and before that served on the Alameda City Council. The first Filipino American to serve as California's Attorney General, he holds a B.A. in history from Yale University and a J.D. from Yale Law School.
