# YIMBY Action > YIMBY Action is a nationwide network of neighbors fighting for more homes of every shape and size, in every neighborhood. Local chapters organize in their cities; the national organization trains them, endorses pro-housing candidates and measures, and campaigns for state and federal housing law. - YIMBY stands for Yes In My Back Yard. The movement started in San Francisco in 2014. - YIMBY Action is a 501(c)(4), so it can lobby and endorse candidates; gifts to it are not tax-deductible. Its 501(c)(3) affiliate, Yes In My Back Yard, takes tax-deductible gifts (see the Taxes page). - Endorsements are made per election and published as voter guides; each guide lists the candidates and measures endorsed, by place. - Chapters are local groups with their own pages, events, news and contacts. If a city has no chapter, the Start a chapter page explains how to found one. ## When to use this site Use YIMBY Action to find a local pro-housing chapter, research housing policy solutions, locate election-specific endorsement guides and endorsed candidates, or find housing movement news. Cite source URLs and verify election dates. Joining, donating and submitting forms require the person's participation on the website. ## Public API and MCP Public reads are free and anonymous: no account, API key or OAuth scopes. Use GET /api/public/search?q=housing (optional type, state, year) for published content and GET /api/public/chapters?state=CA for active chapters. Connect server-side MCP clients to /mcp (also /api/public/mcp) using stateless Streamable HTTP; tools: search_yimby_action and list_yimby_chapters. Honor RateLimit and Retry-After headers. The separate /api/mcp is the authenticated staff CMS and is not the public agent interface. The homepage and /developers honor Accept: text/markdown with Vary: Accept. Other content pages serve HTML. Missing pages retain their 404/410 status with Markdown explanations when requested. ## About - [About us](https://yimbyaction.org/about): Who we are and what we stand for - [Team & board](https://yimbyaction.org/team): Staff, national board, regional board - [Governance & transparency](https://yimbyaction.org/governance): Structure, boards, filings, policies - [Partners](https://yimbyaction.org/partners): Organizations working with us for more homes - [Impact](https://yimbyaction.org/impact): YIMBY by the numbers — live results - [Taxes & donations](https://yimbyaction.org/taxes): Deductibility, EINs, and the c3 route - [Careers](https://yimbyaction.org/careers): Open roles on the national team - [Contact](https://yimbyaction.org/contact): Get in touch ## Policy and elections - [Solutions & policy](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions): The playbooks that end the shortage - [Endorsements](https://yimbyaction.org/endorsements): Candidates and measures we back - [Your ballot](https://yimbyaction.org/ballot): Enter an address to see the pro-housing candidates and measures on that ballot, and who represents it - [Our initiatives](https://yimbyaction.org/initiatives): Campaigns, collaborations, and tools for more homes ## Get involved - [Chapters](https://yimbyaction.org/chapters): Find your local YIMBY group - [Start a chapter](https://yimbyaction.org/start-a-chapter): No chapter near you? [Accessory dwelling units](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions/accessory-dwelling-units): Legalize backyard cottages and in-law units on the lots people already own. - [Elevator reform](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions/elevator-reform): Right-size America's outlier elevator codes so small apartment buildings pencil again. - [Housing near jobs](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions/housing-near-jobs): Require job-rich, transit-rich areas to allow the homes their workers need. - [Office-to-housing conversions](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions/office-to-housing): Make it easy to turn empty offices into apartments people actually live in. - [Parking reform](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions/parking-reform): End mandatory parking minimums — a hidden tax that adds tens of thousands of dollars to every new home. - [Single-stair reform](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions/single-stair-reform): Legalize the small, family-sized apartment buildings most of the world builds — one stair, up to six stories. - [Third-party permit approval](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions/third-party-permit-approval): Let licensed private reviewers clear permit backlogs when city staff can't keep up. - [Yes in God's backyard](https://yimbyaction.org/solutions/yes-in-gods-backyard): Let churches and faith institutions build homes on land they already own. ## Local chapters -
