Our affiliated 501(c)(3) funds education, research, and legal work — just not campaigns — and accepts employer matches, DAFs, foundation, and stock gifts.
“Bad laws created the housing shortage, so changing laws is the job. Lobbying and political campaign work aren't a side project for us — they're the mission.”
YIMBY Action leadership
Why aren't contributions tax-deductible?
YIMBY Action is a nonprofit — a 501(c)(4) social welfare organization (Tax ID 81-5140915). Nobody profits from your gift; every dollar goes to the work.
The IRS trade-off is simple: 501(c)(3) charities get to offer donors a tax deduction, but they're tightly limited in how much lobbying they can do and can't campaign for candidates at all. A 501(c)(4) gives up the deduction and gets unlimited lobbying and the ability to endorse candidates in return.
Since passing pro-housing laws and electing pro-housing candidates is exactly what we exist to do, we chose the structure that lets us do it without a ceiling.
