Summary
Increase funding for subsidized affordable housing through a wide variety of mechanisms, including direct subsidies.
Most housing in the United States is “market-rate”. People or companies that own homes rent or sell them at a price where they can find a buyer. Even if housing becomes less expensive on the open market, there will likely always be people who can’t find housing at a price they can afford.
Traditionally, public funding helps provide housing for people with very low incomes. Funding for this kind of housing currently falls far short of what is needed. YIMBYs believe that we must increase funding for income-qualified housing at all levels of government. Funding affordable housing is critical to create a future of abundant, affordable housing for all.
Policies in this category include bonds for affordable housing, increasing Section 8 funding, and 2022’s Make Colorado Affordable ballot initiative, which we supported.

Affordable for Whom? Rethinking What Makes Housing Truly Affordable

Everyone who lives here should be able to stay.
Everyone who moves here should be welcomed.
YIMBY Denver is a group of dedicated volunteers with full-time jobs. Members of the community support us with not only dollars, but also time, knowledge, and skills.
Inspired by the work of similar groups around the country, YIMBY Denver was started in early 2017 by residents concerned about how restrictions on homebuilding were worsening the housing crisis in Denver.
In 2019, we formalized as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit in order to more effectively advocate for more housing and better transportation. In June 2022, we became a chapter of YIMBY Action, led by President Ryan Keeney. You can stay involved by or .
