Summary
Allow more housing in every neighborhood, especially historically affluent and exclusionary neighborhoods, removing barriers to both subsidized affordable and market rate housing.
American neighborhoods are defined by exclusion. Our system of exclusionary zoning bans duplexes, apartments, subsidized affordable housing, student housing and more in most “residential” areas. Excluding these types of residences keeps neighborhoods homogeneous and makes housing more expensive. YIMBYs advocate for the end of this ban on apartments and other kinds of housing; we want to end exclusionary zoning (aka “upzone”).
Upzoning is especially important in wealthy, high-opportunity neighborhoods where current zoning laws reinforce racial and class segregation.
Policies we have advocated for in this category include density bonuses for dedicated Affordable housing, legalizing Accessory Dwelling Units (aka granny flats), and Colorado’s Strong Communities program.

Everyone who lives here should be able to stay.
Everyone who moves here should be welcomed.
YIMBY Denver is a group of dedicated volunteers with full-time jobs. Members of the community support us with not only dollars, but also time, knowledge, and skills.
Inspired by the work of similar groups around the country, YIMBY Denver was started in early 2017 by residents concerned about how restrictions on homebuilding were worsening the housing crisis in Denver.
In 2019, we formalized as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit in order to more effectively advocate for more housing and better transportation. In June 2022, we became a chapter of YIMBY Action, led by President Ryan Keeney. You can stay involved by or .
